When it comes to rich cultural history, there are few countries in the world that can compete with Greece. The Greek language has been spoken since the Bronze Age and there are historic sites dating back four millennia. It would be impossible for visitors to take in even a decent portion of these sites, but there are some historical monuments and buildings that should not be missed. You should aim to see at least one of the following sites during your stay, as well as other historical spots in the area that you stay.
Mount Athos
Mount Athos, or the Holy Mountain is only accessible to men, and is home to approximately 20 monasteries. Not only is the site a UNESCO heritage site, but it is also an autonomous state, and has been since Byzantine times. As with many of the Greek tourist attractions, it is the beautiful surroundings combined with the incredible history that make it such a popular place to visit.
Mystras
Mystras was abandoned in 1832, but had served as the capital of the Peloponnesus during the 14th and 15th Century. It is now home to some of the best examples of Medieval ruins that you can hope to see. Mystras is situated close to ancient Sparta, and is one of many historical spots in the area, but is certainly one of the finest.
Delphi Theatre
The Delphi Theatre is one of the most important historical sites in Greece and was once home to the oracle of Apollo. When it was built, the Delphi could seat 5,000 people and offered an incredible vista of the area.
Parthenon
Visitors to Athens should ensure that they stop at the Parthenon. Since the completion of its construction in 432BC, the site has served as a temple, a fortress, church, and mosque. The site that can now be seen was actually built as a replacement to an earlier temple that was destroyed by the Persians and its construction took 15 years to complete.
